Formats for congresses, seminars, workshops and forum
The EAAE has introduced several formats for scientific events organized by the EAAE for its members. To prevent confusion the Board describes these formats in more detail below.

Differences in concept
1. The EAAE Congress is a tri-annual event that brings together the whole membership and provides an up to date overview of the discipline. The Board decides on the overall theme of the congress while the Program Committee chooses the topics of the plenary papers and organizes the review process of the submitted papers and posters. The overall theme is chosen rather broad. Papers do not have to be closely related to the theme or the topics of the plenary papers.
2. EAAE Seminars are a 2 or 3 day gathering of (ideally) about 50 – 75 members interested in scientific discussions on a specific topic. This topic tends to be rather applied than  methodological. Seminars resemble congresses with key-notes, papers and posters but on a much smaller scale. Therefore more possibilities for interaction and getting to know new colleagues are provided. Papers have to be related to the topic of the seminar.
3. The workshop format has been introduced to provide more space for learning (in addition to presenting). Two forms have been developed.
a. The PhD workshop, a bi-annual event where PhD candidates get extensive feedback from their peers and a group of senior researchers. In addition they are taught on PhD relevant issues like writing a paper, publishing in journals, reviewing etc.
b. Series of Methodological workshops. As a test a series of 4 workshops on valuation methodology have been set up. The emphasis in this series is not on an applied topic, but on state of the art discussing and developing a methodology.
4. The Forum format has been introduced to provide more space for joint working and transdisciplinary interaction with policy makers and agri-business managers. By staging forms of interaction that are different from the classic paper presentation e.g. brainstorms, ‘class work’ on cases (Harvard case method), discussion forums with business or policy a high level of scientific interaction is sought.
5. Besides these forms, the Board has been thinking about a regular event in Brussels to connect to policy makers, but that has not materialized (yet).

Differences in organisation
The different formats have also some differences in organization.
• The congress location is chosen via a bid book procedure by the Board.
• Seminar proposals are actively solicited by the Board and are welcomed anytime. They are endorsed after a review process by the Board, which sometimes provides help in improving the proposal. Some seminars are co-organised by other associations. Besides national organizations (in these cases the EAAE fee is not waived), these include IAAE, IHIS (Horticulture Society), SYAL and (most likely forthcoming) AAEA.
• The PhD workshop location is actively sought by the Board. Rotation over Europe is one of the criteria.
• The Workshop series is held on an experimental basis in Barcelona. The series is now halfway its four workshops.
• The Forum series is held on an experimental basis in Innsbruck-Igls. It is also endorsed by other organisations.
