The 12th congress of the EAAE in Ghent was a big succes. In total 781 participants travelled to Ghent for this three yearly event. Tuesday the congress was opened by various officials and a key note address was delivered on effects of trade with Asia. Before that event there were several pre-symposia and a business event on volatility of commodity markets. On Wednesday president Eirik Romstad gave his presidential address on the informational role of prices, followed by an institutional economics paper. Besides many scientific sessions there was the General Meeting of the EAAE. The GM confirmed the results of the electronic referendum on voting the new board members (see the news item in the last newsflash). There was a standing ovation for Alison Burrell who addressed the General Meeting as editor of the ERAE for the last time. The evening saw a big party in the castle of Ghent. In the conference bag all participants received a copy of the ERAE with the plenary papers and a copy of EuroChoices, a special on 50 years CAP. Thursday a plenary was dedicated to health economics and product diversity in the retail. The big event on Thursday was a major logistic operation to bring the congress to the European Commission in Brussels for a discussion on the Health Check; the discussion and the train ride where very well received by the participants. Friday a plenary was held on biotechnology and environmental economics. The congress closed with the fellows and awards session (see below) and a lively farewell banquet. |
