                                                                 New EAAE journal: Q Open

It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you a new journal that the EAAE and its publication arm, the EAAEP Foundation, have developed in collaboration with Oxford University Press: Q Open.

The journal is fully open access. The trend to open access changes the revenue model of the publishers and the learned societies that own the journals. The income shifts from sales of subscriptions to billing the researcher who wants to publish. Our current journals, the European Review of Agricultural Economics and EuroChoices, handle this on a paper-by-paper basis: the publishers make papers freely available when researchers pay for the cost of publishing. This hybrid approach is now completed with a fully Open Access journal that is differentiated in aims and scope from our official journal, the European Review, and our outreach publication EuroChoices.

Top journals like the European Review have to turn down many papers that scientifically are strong, but do not score highly in terms of novelty of methods or relevance. This reduces the likelihood of publication of, for example, replication studies, more applied work or research with null-results. In contrast, Q Open will employ a sound-science approach meaning that scientific rigour is the primary consideration, and the editor’s subjective evaluation of relevance, importance, and novelty  is minimised.

The Q in the title of the journal refers to the Q-code of research topics in the Journal of Economic Literature, and signals that the journal is much broader in scope than agricultural economics.  It also covers areas such as environmental and climate economics, natural resource economics, development economics (agricultural/rural topics) and food economics (including related nutrition and health economics topics).  Led by Iain Fraser, a dedicated team of editors and associate editors with expertise in all these fields will handle your papers fast and skillfully.

Launching a new journal is an important venture that only can succeed with the full support of the profession. We hope you will help to make this new journal a success by submitting to the journal and citing its papers. For more information, see the website https://academic.oup.com/qopen
